Overall Concept

The LORELEI-X project addresses the urgent need to enhance maritime safety and tackle the growing challenges of search and rescue (SAR) operations over large areas. As a Coordination and Support Action, it brings together the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) to develop innovative, autonomous technologies that align with European strategic objectives for marine safety and sustainability. Situated in the southeastern Mediterranean, Cyprus serves as a critical maritime hub, making the project particularly relevant to the region’s pressing challenges.

LORELEI-X focuses on developing a fully autonomous carrier vessel and a fleet of small-scale underwater vehicles (UUVs). These systems integrate advanced technologies, including fault-tolerant navigation, cyber-resilience, and real-time data monitoring, ensuring reliability in complex maritime environments. Utilizing cutting-edge computational fluid dynamics (CFD), structural design, and artificial intelligence, the project optimizes the design and operation of autonomous systems, advancing the state-of-the-art in maritime innovation.

A cornerstone of LORELEI-X is its emphasis on capacity building and knowledge transfer. By leveraging NTNU and DTU’s expertise in research commercialization and innovation management, the project equips CMMI with the tools to strengthen Cyprus’ research and innovation ecosystem. This collaboration enhances regional capabilities while fostering sustainable partnerships across Europe, paving the way for future advancements in the blue economy.
