LORELEI-X Tech Talk Showcases the Future of Marine Robotics in Larnaca

On November 26, 2024, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) hosted a Public Tech Talk as part of the LORELEI-X project, an EU-funded Horizon Europe initiative focused on advancing autonomous marine systems for emergency response.

Held at the Multi-Functional Center for Social Activities and Welfare of Larnaca Municipality, the event brought together researchers, maritime experts, and innovation stakeholders to explore new frontiers in marine robotics.

Lieutenant Anastasios Paraskevopoulos, on behalf of Commander (N) Andreas Charalampides of the Joint Research Coordination Centre, delivered welcome remarks highlighting the project’s potential to strengthen maritime safety through cooperative, long-endurance robotic systems.

A message from Mr. Demetris Skourides, Chief National Scientist and Chairman of the Research and Innovation Foundation, delivered by Mr. Andreas Pogiatzis, emphasized the importance of international partnerships in growing Cyprus’s R&I capabilities.

Panelists and technical experts presented LORELEI-X’s core innovations, including:

  • Autonomous surface vessels
  • Micro-unmanned underwater vehicles (micro-UUVs)
  • Resilient remote monitoring platforms

These systems are being developed in collaboration with DTU (Denmark) and NTNU (Norway) to support autonomous underwater search-and-rescue operations.

The event concluded with a networking reception, where participants exchanged ideas and explored future synergies. The Tech Talk reinforced LORELEI-X’s commitment to positioning Cyprus at the forefront of maritime technology and innovation.
